Icon Resin Infiltration

At Peterson and Sunde Dentistry, our team constantly looks for advances in dentistry that benefit you the most. That’s why Icon fills a vital role in our conservative approach to your care. By eliminating drilling and anesthesia, we’re able to stop cavities before they destroy valuable tooth structure.

Cavities form when potent acids from the bacteria in your mouth erode holes into the enamel of your teeth.  Like most problems, this erosion starts small but eventually creates damage that requires invasive treatment to restore. Icon resin technology offers the ideal solution to preserving your tooth structure when we first identify this enamel breakdown.

Early cavities may be detected visually as white patches on the teeth or as small shadows on digital x-rays.  Using the Icon system, we use a highly fluid resin in a handheld applicator to penetrate the damaged enamel surface. Driven by capillary forces, the resin blocks the microscopic areas and prevents further deterioration of your tooth. The specialized resin sets hard with a brief exposure to focused light in the area.

Imagine a sponge full of spaces that absorb water. Under a microscope, damaged areas of enamel look similar. With the loss of protective mineral, bacterial acids work deeper into the weakened matrix. But Icon resin fills the porous enamel and dramatically lowers the risk of larger cavities over time…without drilling or numbing.

Icon offers the most efficient option to stop cavities at their earliest stage and preserve irreplaceable tooth structure. Proactive care means less dentistry for patients of all ages. At Peterson and Sunde Dentistry, that conservative approach underscores our commitment to providing your family with the best dental experience possible.
